Is America Disintegrating?

In Federalist 2, John Jay looks out at a nation of a common blood, faith, language, history, customs and culture.

"Providence," he writes, "has been pleased to give this one connected country to one united people - a people descended from the same ancestors, speaking the same language, professing the same religion ... very similar in their manners and customs ..."

Are we still that "one united people" today? Or has America become what Klemens von Metternich called Italy: "a mere geographical expression"?

In "Suicide of a Superpower," out this week, I argue that the America we grew up in is disintegrating, breaking apart along the fault lines of politics, race, ethnicity, culture and faith; that the centrifugal forces in society have now become the dominant forces.

Our politics are as poisonous as they have been in our lifetimes.

Sarah Palin was maligned as morally complicit in the murder attempt on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Terms like "terrorists" and "hostage-takers" are routinely used on Tea Party members who one congressman said want to see blacks "hanging on a tree."

Half a century after the civil rights revolution triumphed, the terms "racist" and "racism" are in daily use. We remain, said Eric Holder in calling us a "nation of cowards," as socially segregated as ever.

"Outside the workplace, the situation is even more bleak in that there is almost no significant interaction between us. On Saturdays and Sundays, America ... does not, in some ways, differ significantly from the country that existed some 50 years ago."

He is not altogether wrong in that. In California's prisons and among her proliferating ethnic gangs, a black-brown civil war has broken out.

Yet, by 2042, there will be 66 million black folks and 135 million Hispanics here, the latter concentrated in the states bordering Mexico.

What holds us together, then?

We are not now and will not then be "descended from common ancestors." We will consist of all the races, cultures, tribes and creeds of Earth - a multiracial, multicultural, multiethnic, multilingual stew of a nation that has never before existed, or survived. The parallels that come to mind are the Habsburg Empire that flew apart after World War I, and the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia that disintegrated after the Cold War.

No more will we all speak the same language. We will be bilingual and bi-national. Spanish radio and TV stations are already the fastest growing. In Los Angeles, half the people speak a language other than English in their own homes.

As for "professing the same religion," where 85 percent of Americans were Christians in 1990, that is down to 75 percent and plummeting.

The old Christian churches - Presbyterian, Methodist, Lutheran and especially Episcopalian - are splitting, shrinking and dying.

Where three in four Catholics attended Sunday Mass in 1960, it is now one in four. One in three cradle Catholics has lost the faith. The numbers of priests and nuns are plummeting; religious orders are dying; Catholics schools are closing.

The moral consensus and moral code Christianity gave to us has collapsed. Since the great cultural-social revolution of the 1960s, there has occurred what Nietzsche called the "transvaluation of all values."

What was morally repellent - promiscuity, homosexuality, abortion - is now seen by perhaps half the nation as natural, normal, healthy and progressive.

Socially, too, America is breaking down.

Where out-of-wedlock births in the 1950s were rare, today, 41 percent of all American children are born out of wedlock. Among Hispanics, it is 51 percent; among blacks, 71 percent. And the correlation between the illegitimacy rate, the drug rate, the dropout rate, the crime rate and the incarceration rate is absolute.

This helps to explain the four decades of plunging test scores of American children and the quadrupling of the prison population.

And while all this is happening, the state is failing.

We cannot control our borders, win our wars or balance our budgets. In three consecutive national elections - 2006, 2008 and 2010 - the incumbents have been repudiated. Confidence in politics, politicians and the future of the country has never been so low in our lifetimes.

There was a time not so long ago when the nation was united on a common faith, morality, history, heroes, holidays, holy days, language and literature. Now we fight over them all.

Neocons says not to worry, the Constitution holds us together.

Does it? Do we all agree on what the First Amendment says about the freedom to pray in school and celebrate Christmas and Easter? How can we be the "one nation, under God" of the Pledge of Allegiance, or the people "endowed by their Creator" with inalienable rights, if we cannot even identify or discuss or mention that God and that Creator in the schools of America?

Do we agree on what the Ninth Amendment says about right to life? What about what the 14th Amendment says about affirmative action? What the Second Amendment says about the right to carry a concealed gun?

The new secession that is coming, Rick Perry notwithstanding, is not like the secession of 1861. It is a secession of the heart from one another.

Glad you liked it. Would you like to share?

You know it too, when are Americans going to wake up! Don't vote, but complain...let's clean house and get a government WE WANT

  •
We are no longer the U.S.....too many immigrants that bring their own language, culture and the way they dress. Our own government has made it all possible! We need to clean house this November. Obama is NOT a U.S. Citizen he is an Indonesian Citizen.Go to utube and watch the videos. His mom married this man, changed his name to Obama and sent him to islam school...what the hell is he even doing in the country? But, he's our so-called President. He was chosen by the elites that run this country to do their dirty work! Mexicans want Spanish for our language, Muslims want "Sharea Law" right here in Michigan, but the local news never tells the truth on what's going on in this country. Time for AMERICANS to take OUR COUNTRY BACK! Everyone, and I mean every American needs to get off their butts in November to "clean out" Washington...if you don't vote don't complain about being taken over by other peoples or countries!! It is the sign of the 'end days'...believe me, look around and see what's happening. We've got a Muslim as OUR President...stupid. All you who voted for him should of know better..His wife, Michele HATES Whites and everything American stands for...deport her black ass too!

  •
We are in trouble however we can with GODS help bring us back. First we have to get rid of the crap infesting the White House and go from there with a good stiff broom

  •
God's NOT going to help us...read Revelation, the last book of the Bible...it foretells of everything...God has a plan for us and these are the "end days"...Pray, pray, pray....you are found worthy to escape what is to come upon this earth...

Mr. Buchanan, in your eloquent description of America’s
disintegration, you ask “What holds us together?”. I assert that it is
America’s culture that has always ‘held us together’.

Further down, Mr. Buchanan, you actually provide a
compelling definition of ‘culture’ as “…a common faith, morality, history,
heroes, holidays, holy days, language and literature.” Well put. To that I might add common norms, customs,
values, principles, standards, ethics, and ideals, and a common national
    identity and allegiance thereto.

I assert that America will either thrive or perish to the
extent we succeed in maintaining our culture, just as every civilization has
    for all of recorded history.

Taking the issue to the next level then, in order to survive
as Americans we must be willing and able to defend, protect, and preserve, our
culture. Whereas those who presently administer our own government have now
allied with hostile foreign interests, effectively becoming our adversaries, we
are now engaged in a mortal struggle for our very survival, the likes we have
    not seen since 1776.

If there be any true leaders left in America who recognize
the nature of our peril and the identity of our enemies, now is the time to
boldly step forward and offer the talents that God endowed you with. America
    needs you.

I pray for divine guidance, and I pray that we Americans
will find the courage, wisdom, and the resolve, to reclaim our government, our
country, and our culture, lest we be swept from the face of the earth, forever forgotten,
as if we had never even existed.

  •
Excuse me, but it's that very 'culture' he's talking about.

All these thoughts cross my mind every day, as I think that this is not the America of
my grandparents or parents. America, as Mr. Buchanan suggests is dissolving before
our eyes; dissolving into a mish-mash of peoples from all over the globe who will
never assimilate into our cuture, but rather through their own language, cuture and
religion undermine what was once a great and unified nation.
I'm happy to say that I won't live to see the end result in twenty years, for by then this
country will be overrun by Hispanics, Muslims and angry African Americans pushed
aside, because of abjectly wrong immigration laws and political correctness.
We will, for instance go the way of Great Britain, which now has 85 authorized
Sharia Law courts in that country. Europe is realizing the folly of lax imigration too.
    Good luck, America.

Look at how the European countries are being taken over by the Islamists. They have no faith, no morals, no values, multiculturalism, diversity, tolerance, and a welfare state. The Muslims are exploiting this and taking advantage.

Yea, History shows that a Multi-cultural society has never lasted long with its many ideologies and lack of morality. Especially when multi-culturalism and immorality is forced on Society by a select few as we haved witnessed thru out the world in recent history. Yea, my, my, now wasn't Gorbachev's speech/address wonderful? lol

If enough folks feel that America is indeed disintegrating, then maybe, just maybe, they will make their displeasure clear in 2012 by removing Barry and replacing him with a conservative who can clearly articulate the values that made us great - ala Reagan.

My fear is that that will only slow the decay.

    Pat,
You are not dumb but you better wake up. Americans are smarter then portrayed by the media. Fraud committed by government and banking people must be addressed NOW. Morality is not something to be legislated....rather demonstrated by ACTIONS...walking the talk. Nothing else matters as the freedoms of America are all moot and the NWO will herald in a new 'economic' slavery that will enslave us all. I put my pants on one leg at a time just like everybody else as they pointed out in the Depression. Until Government people are held to the same letter of the law, losing their money, freedoms, jobs and retirements, they will not be representing us. Ron Paul or no one at all!

That's all true Pat, but it's a process that has been underway for decades. And nowhere do I observe anything but a recitation of the results. You need to be seeing the cause, and that cause is from Public Education having been taken over by "progressives" and turned into Public Indoctrination. "Educators" these days are mostly brainwashers, and nowhere is that more true than among the social parasites who make up most of leftist academia in our universities. When an America-hating idiot savant, hold the savant, like Saul Alinsky is the revered deity of ObaMao and cohorts, as well as the mass of the Great Brainwashed, what other result can possibly follow? When millions of socially-fragmenting illegal aliens are holding jobs and prospering while millions of actual Americans are wondering where the next dollar is coming from, you have to look at where the support for that process comes from. And it comes also from the plutocrats whose mouthpieces are the mainstream Republicans as well as from the Great Brainwashed, the ideologues who run the brainwashing process and call themselves professors, and their enablers in the We-Swoon-For-Democrats Media.

This "president" (if you can call him that) has made it worse with his divisive ways and policies. As a nation we are to hung up on being politically correct. If you say or do something that just one person objects to it becomes a major incident / issue. As a whole everybody needs to be more understanding and have a whole lot more common sense. We need to get government out of private business, stop debating over the word "God" on our currency and in our Pledge of Allegiance. The mandate to not have prayer is absurd when you consider they still pray in Congress. Things were much better when we didn't have all these regulations, taxes, non-representative representaives, all this emphasis on being polictically correct.

  •
while agreeing with your points, the role of government taxing income and liberally conducting search and seizure, swirls in my mind around the doubts of deity in our nation. government is tearing us apart as much as science. we have lost our spiritual unification, and many things contribute- and no one individual is willing to sacrifice their life to God. even our pope has a pope mobile. how have we lost so much faith?

God , Jesus and The Word are the only good teachings in this world.. The further we go away from that the more evil will spread and the sooner we will collapse .. I don't believe that most people even know the difference between right and wrong or good and evil anymore...It is really a shame that mankind is not stronger. We will end up killing each other off..The evil in our government right now is pitting all peoples against one another and we are falling for it hook and sinker....
    God save us....

I am beginning to think we are past saving ourselves. We keep re-electing the same frauds, keep buying the illegal drugs, and refuse to change the education system which is failing us. What other outcome can there be? We are as much to fault as the government.

P S Why do we have to take the bait? I guess it is easier than using our own common sense ..

“One has to wonder, how many people, self-proclaimed Christians, many of whom we see in church with us every week, never really even made a conscious choice to accept Jesus Christ as their personal savior. How many people inherited their faith, have maintained it, and adhere to it publicly, but have never actually asked Jesus to be lord of their lives? How many of us are unwittingly destined to hear Christ tell us, “I never knew you; depart from Me.”
My new book, The Four Pillars of the Kingdom, is set to be released soon. It is, not only a response to some of the metaphysical arguments of the so-called New Atheists, but also a call to believers to take their faith serious in a very real way. You can find a few excerpts from the work at my website, The Immaculate Conservative, here:

    http://bit.ly/TheFourPillars

Please read and let me know what you think!

We are a nation in our death throws. There can be no going back. The barbarians have won. There are not enough americans that care about america. There are too many on american soil that look at the nation as a place to get free stuff. The provider of free stuff is big government and that is never going to end, is it. The new american dream if to get on as many govt. programs as possible. You can not agree but, it is so.

I'm so very happy you have no real power.

You want to see a fascist, I mean a real one, you only have to look to 1600 Penn. Av. Wash.D.C. P.S. before you call me a racist, I plan on voting for Herman Cain. I'm still not with him on the 999 thing, but the man himself is a breath of fresh air.

Just curious what you mean how is he a facist? Please give examples and why you disagree....

  •
Why don't you explain why he's not a facist.

  •
Decrying that we're no longer a predominately white christian nation implies that those folks should not hold their place in our society.
    That is fascism.

  •
It does not matter the color of the Christian, only that one belongs to Christ. Jesus said a house divided cannot stand. America today validates His statement. Deuteronomy 28:15ff explains how He will bring the destruction about. Jeremiah 47:2 tells how quickly it will happen.

  •
He never said they should not hold their place in society he is just stating a fact of demographics...fascism is defined as:often capitalized: a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
None of these are advocated by Buchanan..again give examples of where he has advocated this.....

Good job Jimbob! T. Badkey is obviously a card-carrying member of the Great Brainwashed, who, in stereotypical fashion can do nothing but regurgitate their brainwashing. When you press any of them for something outside of the Party Line you get the sophmoric, or sophmoronic replies like his first one, and when you challenge that, you get nothing.

    Is America Disintegrating?

    In a word, YES!

Redistribution has sucked up all available cash and shipped it to DC where fedeal workers, congress members enjoy the highest living standards known to man. The rest of the country is withering with no ability to get out of the hole the federal workforce has put them into.

It wont turn around until we start the work in eleminating this weight on our shoulders.

We have tried big government and it doesn ot work.

Time to GO BACK TO WHAT WORKED!

I don't always agree with Pat's conclusions, but he is generally correct in his assertions. Balkanization and moral decay lie at the root of the nation's problems. In part this is a result of the imperfection of mankind, but to a greater extent it is the result of a conscious, deliberate strategy of Leftist politicians to divide and conquer. Sooner or later the outcome must be either subjugation by a ruling elite, or revolution.

Pat says, "We cannot control our borders, win our wars or balance our budgets." That's not quite correct. "We will not control our borders, win our wars or balance our budgets."
